Community Service Projects

I believe that community service is extremely important. I have had people go out of their way to help me and my family, and I feel that it is important to give back to my community and to other communities in need. When I was able to participate in community service projects with my church, my 7th grade year, I have been active in these projects ever since. With my church we have done projects including Habitat for Humanity, York's Helping Hands for the Homeless, NYC Mission, and Operation Christmas Child. I have been to Louisiana to help with Hurricane Katrina Relief with the Presbytery. There we did many projects including tiling a floor. Also, we participate in programs connected with Southern York County Food Bank, where we collect food and provide Christmas gifts for families in need. The biggest project that we are a part of is with Group Workcamps. Our church does a mission trip with Group Workcamps at least every other year. I have also tutored a 3rd grade student in the areas of math, reading, and writing with the Red Lion Leo Club/AARP program. Community Service is obviously a very important part of my life. I have no doubt in my mind that I will be involved with community service projects and activities until the day I die.

The picture to the left is from a trip that I took with my church into Maryland. I got put into a crew to build a porch for an elderly lady. We also painted and hung a screen door. This was a part of the Group Workcamps Foundations. This photograph shows our finished product. With Group Workcamps I have done everything from painting the exterior of a home to roofing to siding to building a porch. No matter what the project is, it is a challenge, but offers opportunities to create lasting relationships, give back to communities, and help those in need all over the country. I have been to many states including Wyoming, Maryland, and Ohio.

I have also worked with Habitat for Humanity. With Habitat for Humanity I did a local project. I worked on a house in Red Lion, Pa. Personally, I helped to hang drywall in the basement of the house.
